Following the close of Melbourne Design Week 2026, we are reflecting on RE:BORN, an exhibition that brought together circular design, textile artistry, furniture restoration and immersive interiors. Presented by Romance Was Born and Cultivated, with support from Artbank, studio x us, Cult Design and TSAR Carpets, RE:BORN explored how overlooked furniture and discarded forms can be restored, reimagined and given new life.

A Reflection on Melbourne Design Week 2026
Melbourne Design Week 2026 ran from 14–24 May 2026, bringing together more than 400 events across Melbourne and regional Victoria. The program highlighted design across interiors, architecture, furniture, product design, hospitality, manufacturing, technology and more.
Within that wider program, RE:BORN stood out for its focus on transformation. The exhibition did not treat reuse as a limitation. Instead, it showed how discarded or second-hand furniture can become expressive, layered and highly considered design.
Now that the exhibition has concluded, what stays with us is not only the visual richness of the work, but the clarity of its message: design can extend the life of materials when imagination and craft are applied with care.
What RE:BORN Set Out to Explore
RE:BORN was presented at Artbank Melbourne in Collingwood. The exhibition transformed overlooked furniture and discarded forms into new works through restoration, bespoke textile artistry and collaborative making.
Each piece began with something that already existed. Rather than erasing its past, the project honoured the history and character of each object.
That idea resonates deeply with how we think about interiors. A space becomes more meaningful when its materials are chosen with intention. Surfaces, furniture, textiles and objects all carry memory. When handled well, they give a room depth beyond appearance.
Why Circular Design Felt So Relevant
One of the strongest takeaways from RE:BORN was that circular design does not need to feel restrained or purely functional.

RE:BORN was described as a fully realised environment of lighting, architectural elements, bespoke surfaces and custom sound. Every detail contributed to a world of texture, colour and atmosphere.
That focus on surface felt especially close to our own work.

What Interior Designers Can Take From RE:BORN
For interior designers, RE:BORN offered a strong reminder: materials should not be treated as passive finishes.
A restored chair can carry history. A textile treatment can change the identity of an object. A custom surface can shift how people move through and remember a space.
This matters across residential, hospitality and commercial interiors. In each setting, clients are asking for spaces that feel more personal, more durable and more connected to a story.
