Featuring abstract designs inspired by the art and design of the mid-20th century — in particular, the object-mobile artwork of Alexander Calder — the collection’s sculptural graphics are enhanced by colourful dimension, adding a design-forward focal point for any room.
“The goal was to create stylish area rugs that felt more like pieces of art and infuse an eclectic sensibility to any interior space,” says Macarounas. “My aim was for each design to be simple, yet strong enough to breathe on its own or sit in harmony with other interior design elements.”
The TSAR Carpets team started the design process by physically cutting out shapes from paper and layering them on top of each other, which created an interesting interplay with negative space. This design exercise led to the inclusion of the abstract graphics and subtle changes in pile density, height and fibres to add dimension; the minimalist use of colour and pattern in each rug balances these techniques.

“We brought Michelle’s vision to life by designing and then meticulously translating each graphic pattern into artistic area rugs teeming with alluring colorways, subtle textures and optimal pile height,” says Teresa Cerebek, TSAR Carpets Senior Designer. “With over 30 years of expertise, our commitment to producing high-quality and bespoke floor coverings made TSAR Carpets the ideal design partner to achieve the subtle beauty of the Tæpper Collection.”

Michelle’s sophisticated point of view and mutual admiration for timeless design made this a dream collaboration.
“The process of collaborating with TSAR Carpets on the collection has been a blissful explosion of creativity. The team shares an open-minded appetite for artistic exploration and I was confident they could deliver my vision for the Tæpper Collection,” says Macarounas.

Each luxurious rug found in the Tæpper Collection is hand-tufted from the finest grade of New Zealand wool, which offers incredible durability and softness underfoot. The collection is available in four patterns and colourways. Specification, colours and design scale can also be altered to suit any project.
